Design of Moulded Products

Injection moulded plastic components

Have you had a product designed which looked great on paper or on the computer screen, only to find that it is impossible to make the tooling to produce it without considerable modifications, or it would need very expensive mould tool?Wheel Arch Former

At this stage the production time-scales and deadlines for product launch are usually already set. The real costs resulting from delays imposed by product re-design can be enormous. Applying considerations for toolability, draft angles for shutoffs and surface finishes, ejection and ease of assembly early in the design process is essential to minimise delays.

Don't make costly mistakes

Wouldn't it be better to trust your designs to people that fully understand the moulding process, that can optimise the design to reduce the complexity of the tool (and hence the cost) to a minimum saving you time and money?

A fair amount of our work at Alphatech is working for moulding companies and toolmaking companies putting right designs that  have been brought to them but cannot be made for various reasons. This re-work has to be paid for. It may be the moulders or toolmakers that pay us directly but ultimately it is YOU that will be paying for this work in the increased cost of the tooling or moulding. At Alphatech ALL of our staff that are involved in design are also fully trained engineers and have many years experience in mouldmaking and toolmaking.  Moulded parts designed by us can, in almost every case, be made with no modifications whatsoever.

Experience counts

There are a huge amount of variables to consider when designing moulded products. Even though our design team  has considerable experience in this field, we do not profess to knowing all the answers.  In cases where we may ourselves need help and advise, we have a large resource of experienced minds to call on including professional tool designers, moulding experts and world class toolmakers.

Die cast parts

Aluminium, Zinc and Brass die castings

Although designing for die cast parts shares many aspects with designs for plastic moulded parts there are some subtle differences especialy with regard to material flow, draft requirements and small intricate detail. Die cast

Tooling for die castings needs to be more robust than tooling for plastics and care needs to be taken when designing the product to avoid subsequent tooling that is unreliable and in constant need of repair.

We have considerable experience of working with die cast parts but  if we don't know the answer to a problem we have strong relationships with die casting companies that are always willing to offer help and advise.

Toolmakers

Need to find a toolmaking company that is right for your product?

Toolmaking companies tend to differ greatly in their abilities to produce different types of mould tool efficiently and to an acceptable quality.

Some may be more suited to products with small intricate features, others more suited to a larger moulding with complex 3D shapes, whereas some companies will be more suited to multi-cavity tools.

Their salesperson will never tell you that their competitor might be a better bet for a particular tool. The wrong decision could be costly.

Independent advice from people such as us that work with a large number of toolmakers and have gained an in-depth knowledge of their strengths and weaknesses would be a huge benefit to making the right choice.
